MISSION STATEMENT:

HABITAT FOR STRAYS, INC is a No-Kill 501c3 cat rescue and sanctuary that began operating twenty five years ago. Most of our rescues came from the streets of the South Bronx and the woods of Westchester County, NY, where we were originally located. Most of our cats are unadoptable, because they are feral, leukemia or aids positive. We do not return ferals to the streets. We provide them with a safe, caring environment for life.

Six years ago we moved from Westchester County because of lack of space. With borrowed money, we moved north and build a two thousand sq. ft. building. Expanding it has enabled us to help the community: Often we are asked to take in a cat or cats whose caregiver/guardian has become hospitalized or gone into a nursing home. Very often the caregiver/guardians refuse help for themselves until they know their beloved animal companions are being cared for.

Our immediate goal is to establish a fund to allow us to continue our rescue work and to make the animals' lives even better by providing outdoor runs. This year we installed air conditioning and stereo in each room of the building.

Our day not only includes rescues - we take many phone calls and try to return them the same day. Many people just want advice with a challenging cat issue or with a stray around their home. By helping these people it could mean the difference in a cat keeping her home or becoming a shelter animal - or even worse, being put out on the street.

But enough about us...

Meet some of our residents:

SPENCER and TRACY - Two of seven cats left behind when their caregiver who was renting a home, entered a nursing home. The landlord found them a week later without food or water.

CHEYENNE and KIDS - Cheyenne was abandoned when her owner moved and left behind a very pregnant cat. A sympathetic neighbor began feeding her . After a few weeks the neighbor noticed Cheyenne spending a lot of time in her garden. Upon inspection she found four newborn kittens. HABITAT responded to her phone call, and gave Cheyenne a safe, quiet place to nurse her babies.

NERO - One of our oldest residents came from the South Bronx and is close to twenty years old. He is the official greeter in one of the Senior rooms and has no fear of jumping on your shoulders, looking to take a ride.

'Name Me' - Meet our newest resident. Thanks to a good Samaritan, this six week old kitten was scooped up as she attempted to cross one of the busiest roads in the county. Rather than put her in a cage alone, we took a chance and placed her with Cheynne and her babies. After about an hour she was accepted by her new family. Suggestions for a name will be appreciated!
